I got the idea of a monthly reset routine from one of my favorite YouTubers MuchelleB, and decided a few months ago to try this out in my business.

I loved it so much that I now do this routine every single month and it really helps me to stay organized and on top of things. Here are 7 things I love to do during my monthly reset routine.

#1. Transforming my inbox

Let’s start with the most stressful, and probably the most important one of these small business tips: your inbox.

Start with re-organizing your inbox, delete all the emails you don’t need, archive the e-mails you do need to save in the adequate folder, and act upon the emails that require some action from your side, so you have a re-organized, clean inbox that doesn’t overwhelm you.

#2. Re-organize your to-do lists and calendar

Brain dump all your to-dos, commitments, appointments, and events and create your master to-do list for the month (business, as well as personal stuff)

I personally like to categorize my to-do’s with certain tags (such as errands, computer, phone calls, cleaning,…). This makes it easier afterward to batch similar tasks together and get them checked off in one go.

So, for example, I will do all my errands the same afternoon or will spend a whole morning doing all my phone calls at once.

I will then schedule my master to-do list in my calendar (but feel free to use a planner if you prefer) so I know exactly what I will be doing and when.

Doing this planning session really makes a HUGE difference for me since I have the peace of mind that everything is written down and planned out, so I no longer have to remember all these things.

#3. Organize and update your information management system

Take the time to organize all the information on random post-its, notes on your phone, scribbles in your notebook, or print screens you have taken.

Organize all this information and give it a home in your information management system, so it is easy to find those valuable pieces of information afterward.

If you don’t have an information management system in place, I would totally recommend that you create one. I personally use Notion for this and it just. changed. my. life. completely.

#4. Create or update your vision board

Another thing I love to do in order to create this new, fresh feeling is to update and refresh my vision board with new pictures and quotes and set it as the wallpaper on my computer.

As you grow as a person and as a business, sometimes your vision board has to grow too.

Sometimes, the things that inspired you & resonated with you once, right now just don’t anymore, so change up your vision board if necessary with new pictures and quotes that really resonate with you on a very deep level.

#5. Clean up your desk space

One of the things that make the biggest difference in how inspired and fresh I feel, is my desk situation.

I feel like the state of my mind is often a reflection of the state of my environment (and the other way around). So, if I feel chaotic and all over the place then my desk will reflect this, aaand if my desk gets messy, then this will influence how I feel as well.

So organize your desk situation. Make sure you have all your notebooks, notepads, planners, favorite pens, and just everything you need on a daily or regular basis, in hands reach. However, get rid of everything you don’t need, and just act as a distraction.

#6. Stock up on your favorite things

Go ahead and stock up on all your favorite tools and stationery.

Replace that pen that is out of ink, the notebooks you completely filled out, and a new box of staples if you ran out of it.

#7. Do a digital declutter

Last but not least, get your digital files reorganized and get rid of all the computer files you don’t need anymore.

Re-organize everything neatly in their folders, ideally in the cloud so you can still access your documents even when your computer crashes.

I love doing monthly resets! I agree with what you said about updating your vision board – that’s something I love doing whenever I set a new goal. Love this post 🙂

  2. I am a sucker for organisation. I love a tidy desk and an even tidier inbox! I sometimes find I get distracted when I have too much going on but I will be sure to follow your tips xx

A clean and organised desk definitely makes me more productive. Really enjoyed reading this, looking forward to your next post

  4. Greg says:

I do a pretty good job of keeping my email inbox clean. I live my the near zero inbox rule. But keeping my work area clean is another thing I need to work on. I try to do that at least once a month and I still wonder where all the “stuff” came from

  5. Kelly says:

Perfectionist over here too, and I love that fresh start feeling! If it’s been a particularly hectic week, I’ll reset weekly rather than wait until the beginning of the month.

  6. Linda says:

I do not have a vision board set up, but I think I need to add one! I’m operating out of a spare room right now while hubby is working from home (in the nice office), so I’ve been feeling out of sorts and more disorganized than usual (and I’m a hyper-organized person). I try to stay on top of all the things on the daily, but doing a ‘deep clean’ each month would help, too. Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to do this each month?

  7. Mimmie says:

Great tips! Decluttering and reorganizing my stuff always helps clear my mind and think more straight! Thanks for sharing!

  8. Stephanie says:

I love this. I definitely need to declutter to work efficiently. Thanks for the great ideas.

  9. Binet says:

These are great tips! It is so important to have an organized space. An organized space equals an organized mind!

  10. Arica says:

Excellent ideas! I find myself doing some of these things already. I often re-write my lists and organize my desktop because it drives me crazy to have clutter! Definitely will be implementing some of your ideas into my routine!
