I don’t know about you, but if you are anything like me, you are either black or white. And I’m not talking about your skin color of course. I’m talking about either being completely in and doing something every single day or not doing it at all, there is literally no in-between. I was convinced that a balanced life wasn’t just for me.
And even though it’s difficult for me to admit, being as extreme as that, is simply unsustainable. You might notice that when you are this extreme you experience something that I personally call “cycles of extremeness”.
With these cycles of extremeness, I’m talking about those times that you work out 6 times a week and after a few weeks you’re so fed up with it, that you quit working out for a whole month altogether. And then, you start feeling so guilty, and to compensate and “punish yourself”, you force yourself to work out an unrealistic number of days in the week again… and like that over and over again.
It’s like you unconsciously find a way to restore the balance, even if you don’t want to. So doing nothing for a month balances out those exaggerated and extreme amounts of workouts.
Lately, I have definitely noticed that I genuinely want more balance in my life, so today I will share with you what I’m specifically planning to do in order to introduce more balance and spontaneity into my life and business.
So if you are struggling with creating a balanced life as well and you are as black-and-white as I am, then this blog post is perfect for you.
Daily Habits For A Balanced Life
So I used to think that a balanced life was absolutely boring. I liked being extreme because I liked challenging myself, right? But I never understood why I never could keep up with it.
And now, I finally realized that it’s a much bigger challenge to work out consistently 3 or 4 times a week for months and months, then working out every single day for 3 weeks and then quitting completely.
So in the long term, it’s always better to choose for long-term consistency rather than short-term sprints. It’s not only more productive this way, but also healthier. This realization really opened my eyes and since then, I have decided to embrace and celebrate a balanced life from now on and introduce way more of it into my life.
So in order to restore my balance, I am implementing something that I call “my bucket habits”, which are basically habits that are focusing on a specific area and have a similar goal but you can choose at that moment itself what you feel most like doing.
So I want to introduce the next bucket habits into my life:
- Mind habits
- Body habits
- Work habits
- Connection habits
And so every single day, I want to accomplish all of these habits, but what specific activity these entail, is completely up to me and I can spontaneously decide depending on my mood.
So let’s dive into all of these different bucket habits.
1. Mind habits
So, the goal of the mind habits is to grow on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level, by cultivating self-awareness and overcoming limiting beliefs, stress, and anxiety, and being able to create this stillness, inner peace, and self-acceptance.
And there are so many different ways to work on this goal:
For example:
- Learning how to meditate
- Reading a self help book
- Journaling and getting to know yourself better
- Speaking with a coach or therapist
- Having deep and vulnerable conversations with loved ones
- Even watching a YouTube video about something you are mentally struggling with can fall under this bucket habit.
2. Body habits
The ultimate goal of the body habits is quite straightforward: making you sweat and raising your heart rate so that you can feel this energy flowing through your body.
Don’t focus on just losing weight, that can be quite demotivating since it’s so volatile… focus instead on how energetic and good you feel during and after the workout.
And the biggest secret to success is to not limit yourself to a strict workout plan, in any case, that didn’t work for me.
Let yourself free in the way that you want to reach that goal.
- A long walk
- A HITT work out
- A swimming session
- Going for a run
- An intense cleaning session could count as a body habit
- Or even playing “Just Dance” on your PlayStation
3. Work habits
The goal of your work habits is to get ahead on those business or career goals that just completely align with the person you are and the lifestyle that you want to create for yourself.
So block out a minimum of 2 hours every day to just focus on these projects that you know will move the needle forward and have a big long-term impact.
What this specifically entails, is completely up to you.
4. Connection habits
Last, but not least the goal of the connection habits is to connect with someone in your day, and to honestly just have genuinely a good time.
This could include activities such as:
- Doing a picnic with a friend you haven’t seen in a while
- Calling your mum
- Sending a WhatsApp message to that cousin you don’t get to see often
- Doing something fun with your bestie
- Quality time with your partner
- Asking your siblings how they have been lately
- Trying out a new hobby where you can meet new people
- Talking with someone random in the street
Making sure to connect with someone every day is super important, especially during this pandemic since it’s easy to get isolated.
Why are these Bucket habits so great for creating a balanced life?
I find that implementing these bucket habits is just perfect, because it motivates you to grow, connect, move and reach your professional goals, but it doesn’t make you stick to a super strict time schedule or to-do list.
Because we are human, and it’s completely normal and ok that sometimes we just don’t feel like doing that thing that we had planned.
But by recognizing that there are so many different ways to achieve the exact same thing. It just makes it so much easier, balanced, and sustainable to reach those goals, by adding more spontaneity and freedom into your life.
I feel that it’s just the perfect bliss point between planning every minute of the day on one side and getting absolutely nothing done in a day on the other side.
So super excited to try these bucket habits out, and I will keep you guys updated on my experience and journey with this in another blog post.

I love your phrase: choose for long-term consistency rather than short-term sprints. That’s going to be my mantra for 2022. I think it’s easy to fall into the trap of nothing, myself included. It’s a goal of mine to focus on long-term consistency.
